Drawing Dialogues 4 - Wednesday August 3rd

For the 4th Drawing Dialogues we'll be discussing drawing as mapping - inspired by Drawing papers #3. I'll have copies to hand out on the night and feel free to bring any examples of work which you feel may be relevant. You can check out the interactive issuu pdf beforehand at www.issuu.com/mikecarney/docs/dp3_singles

Drawing Dialogue Conversation 3 - Wednesday June 1st

Our third reading is now decided on - 'The Power of Suggestion' by Bruce Hainley which will be introduced by Joanna Geldard. The article relates to 'The Power of Suggestion: Narrative and Notation in Contemporary Drawing', a 1997 exhibition at Los Angeles MOCA. The conversation will take place at the Crompton Tavern, Derby on Wednesday June 1st, 8p.m. If you would like more info or to get involved just drop us an email.

The next reading is ready...

Sol LeWitt
All Combinations of Arcs from Corners and Sides, Straight Lines, Not-Straight Lines, and Broken Lines
1975
"The ABCDs of Sol LeWitt"
Williams College Museum of Art

We've had a few problems getting hold of the Badiou essay (hoping we can sort it for a future Drawing Conversation) and so have decided to go with Anna Lovatt's 'Ideas in Transmission: Le Witt's Wall drawings and the Question of Medium' which will be introduced by Martin Lewis. If you are interested in participating the link is HERE The conversation will take place on Wednesday April 6th, 8 p.m. onwards.

Drawing Conversation 2 - Wednesday April 6th

mind map 02.02.11 - J. McArdle
The first Drawing Conversation took place on Wednesday 2nd February and went well - seventeen people attended and the second conversation has been booked for Wednesday April 6th. We are hoping to hold one on the first Wednesday of every other month - giving time to organise and distribute the reading (and of course actually read it.). The reading for the next conversation will hopefully be Alan Badiou's article 'Drawing' and will be presented by Martin Lewis. There are links on the sidebar to the website's of some of the artists who attended - so we can put work to faces! (If you attended and want a link - email me with your web address). It's early days - we have to make some decisions about whether to limit numbers, tweak the format a bit and have ideas for more practical drawing events to run alongside presentations and dialogues in the future...but a really positive start.

Drawing Conversations

Our initial project (starting in January 2011) will be an informal monthly or bi-monthly session at The Crompton, Derby where someone will put forward a reading or proposition which will start off the conversation. This can be something which has direct relevance to work being produced or just be something of interest which the initiator thinks worthy of discussion. The only rule is that it must be drawing related (and not too long!). All participants will read this before the meeting; the initiator will start of the conversation (referring to examples of their own work if they wish) and a dialogue/ debate will then hopefully develop. Participants will take it in turns to put forward a reading/ proposition giving a varied programme and encouraging people to think outside their own practice. Initially we're looking for expressions of interest, (either Beth or Kate will provide the reading for the first meeting) so if it's something you would like to be involved in let us know.....
